مستخلص: The article focuses on the challenges of the research preparation of undergraduate students in Public Administration and Management. Research preparation enhances the research skills, analytical skills, critical thinking as well as cognitive skills of students. To determine whether undergraduate students in Public Administration acquire relevant knowledge as far as research methodology is concerned, it is important that the research preparation of the students is scrutinised. An unobtrusive technique as described by Auriacombe (2016:6) was utilised to scrutinise scholarly sources such as articles and books published on the selected topic. This scrutiny included a critical analysis of research preparation challenges of undergraduate students as depicted in the literature. Before attempting to understand the challenges, it is important to undertake an analysis of the concept 'research preparation' and its usage in scholarly literature. Then the research skills that are currently acquired by research methods students are discussed to understand the skills that need to be imparted to students during research preparation. This discussion informs the debate on relevant pedagogies that can be adopted when teaching undergraduate research methods. The 'learning by doing' approach seems to be the most appropriate one when teaching research methodology students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
