Abstract (English): | Coralline red algae assimilate HCO3- to precipitate CaCO3 in their tissues in the form of calcite or aragonite. A characterization of the biomolecular content and the crystalline structure of the biomineral of coralline red algae from the Pacific coast of Mexico was performed by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron (SEM) and tunneling microscopy (STM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The preliminary conclusion drawn from the results is that this type of calcite-aragonite biomineral has a very low organic content occluded within the crystals. FTIR bands at 2945 and 2889 cm-1 indicate that the most likely organic molecules are carbohydrates; moreover, peptide bond bands (amide I ∼1640 and amide II ∼1540 cm-1) were not detected, suggesting that proteins are not related to mineral synthesis or their stabilization. This could be explained if the biomineral is synthesized by a biologically controlled extracellular mineralization process. The XRD study showed two main mineral phases, calcite and aragonite, with very similar structural parameters to the inorganic mineral counterparts. Abstract (Spanish): | Las algas rojas coralinas asimilan HCO3- para precipitar CaCO3 en sus tejidos en forma de calcita o aragonita. Se realizó una caracterización del contenido biomolecular así como de la estructura cristalina del biomineral en algas rojas coralinas de las costas del Pacífico mexicano mediante difracción de rayos X (XRD) en polvos, microscopía electrónica de barrido (MEB) y de túnel (STM), y espectroscopía infrarroja con transformada de Fourier (FTIR). Con los resultados se llegó a la conclusión preliminar de que este tipo de calcita-aragonita tiene un muy bajo contenido de materia orgánica ocluida dentro de los cristales. Las bandas de FTIR a 2945 y 2889 cm-1 encontradas indican que las moléculas orgánicas más probables son los hidratos de carbono; además, no se detectaron bandas de enlace peptídico (amida I ∼1640 y amida II ∼1540 cm-1), lo que sugiere que las proteínas no están relacionadas con la síntesis mineral o con su estabilización. Esto se podría explicar si el biomineral fuera sintetizado por un proceso extracelular de mineralización controlado biológicamente. El análisis de XRD mostró dos fases minerales principales, calcita y aragonita, muy similares en sus parámetros estructurales a sus contrapartes minerales inorgánicas pero con modificaciones en la estructura molecular.
