Time: Last hundred years is a period of very profound demographic changes in Poland. Population ageing – i.e. shift in age structure of population resulted from increase in proportion of the aged 60+ – is the most important among them. The demographic process is especially visible when case of Łódź is under study. In the 19th century and in the first two decades of the 20th century age structure of the Łódź inhabitants was extremely young due to immigrants inflow which rejuvenated the population. After 1930 the ageing were a fact with acceleration in the post-war period. As a consequence of very low fertility and decreasing attraction of the city as a settlement place in the last three decades Łódź is almost the most advanced in the population ageing in comparison to the other biggest Polish cities (Warsaw, Wroclaw). The study is aimed at presentation how in the 20th century the population ageing in the biggest Polish cities manifested with special attention paid to issues of intergenerational support and to the so called double ageing
