It will also discuss some of the advantages of Schmuhl School annexing. SCHMUHL SCHOOL BEFORE ANNEXING (1955) Land Schmuhl School was located on a plot of land that was about one- half acre in size. It was bordered in front by Highway 30, on one side by a dirt road (School House Road), and on the back and remaining side by a cornfield. The location of the school made it virtually impossible for expansion. The playground equipment consisted of four swings, two teeter-boards, one slide. There was very limited space for group games. School The building was a typical one-room schoolhouse with the basement made into an additional classroom. In the room on the main floor grades one, two, three, and four were taught. Grades five, six, seven, and eight were taught in the basement. There were seven first graders, one second grader, ten third graders, five fourth graders, three fifth graders, six sixth graders, six seventh graders, and three eighth graders for a total of forty-one students in 1955. The classroom equipment was of average quality and at that time there was enough for every student. There were 1 2 also a radio and phonograph. Because each teacher had four grades to teach, there were no school-sponsored activities. COMPARISONS BETWEEN SCHMUHL AND NEW LENOX New Lenox School District #122 had two schools. The total enroll-ment in 1955 was 415 students. Each teacher, with the exception of the seventh/eighth grade group, had only one grade to teach. With the exception to the one group, teachers could devote 100% of their instructional time to their grade compared to Schmuhl where the teachers could only devote about 25% of their time to each grade. New Lenox had one kindergarten teacher, two first grade teachers, two second grade teachers, two third grade teachers, two fourth grade teachers, one fifth grade teacher
