مصطلحات موضوعية: The increasing agricultural biomass production, driven by the growing food demand and poor waste management, poses environmental issues when it comes to disposal/incineration.1 Grain wastes such as rice husks (RH), rich in silica and lignin (about 20% each), offer valorization opportunities within the circular bioeconomy context.2 On the other hand, conventional crop protection methods often use excessive amounts of active ingredients, leading to higher costs, lower bioavailability for plants, uncontrolled distribution, and environmental risks. Addressing these issues requires innovative approaches to ensure a slow and controlled release of active ingredients.3 To explore this route, this study presents a composite based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) derived from RH, and lignin, the Kraft process by-product, as a platform for the controlled release of copper ions, an essential micronutrient. 4,5 MSNPs were used as adsorbent component and Kraft lignin acetone soluble fraction (KLAS) as chelating agent for Cu2+ ion, 5 various KLAS:MSNP ratios were explored. Dimensional and morphological characterizations revealed agglomerates in submicron range, and ζ-potential analysis confirmed their colloidal stability. The composites loaded with copper ions exhibited larger dimensions, likely due to agglomeration facilitated by copper ions acting as bridging species. The maximum adsorption capacity of KLAS for Cu2+ ions was determined (0.154 gCu2+/gKLAS). The release kinetics studies at different pH values showed a faster release at higher pH values, possibly due to the increased lignin solubility. These results suggest potential applications of these biobased nanocomposites for the controlled release of ingredients in agriculture
