مصطلحات موضوعية: Q1-390, Science (General), Pollution due to natural radioactivity is still a poorly known topic among young people. This paper describes the contents for an introductive university course or lecture conceived in a multitask program. Along with a so-called “flipped” configuration, where students are able to receive didactic materials prior to face-to-face lessons, multimedia contents should be shown to the students, who are at first faced with known anthropogenic accidents. Moreover, field and laboratory experimental activities can provide further insight regarding the radiological assessment strategies. Here, the most important principles and effects concerning the radioactive decay of naturally occurring radionuclides are described. The greatest part of natural radioactivity derives from terrestrial radionuclides occurring in soil and rocks. The radionuclides are atoms characterized by an excess of nuclear energy, which makes them unstable giving rise to decay. The radionuclides emit gamma rays, as well as alpha and/or beta particles. People are constantly subjected to indoor and outdoor exposure due to natural radioactivity. The possible sources can be considered as external due to natural sources located outside the human body, and internal provoked by ingestion or inhalation of radionuclides. The indoor exposure from natural sources is mainly related to radiation from building materials and to radon entering buildings from soils and rocks though cracks in walls and floor. The outdoor exposure mainly accounts for the terrestrial gamma radiation that crosses the soil-air interface, and for the radon emitted from soils in seismic and volcanic areas. In this regard, there is a strong relationship between health diseases (e.g. cancer, necrosis and DNA and RNA modifications) and high-levels of natural radioactivity. For this reason, the radiological assessment of the most vulnerable areas represents a key point in order to mitigate hazard and risk connected to the human exposure to natural radioactivity

Democrats In Row Wheeler of Montana Accuses Chairman Shonse of Aiding 'Stop Roosevelt' Movement. Washington, June 7, (AP)—A concerted attack upon the prohibition resubmission plank tentatively agreed upon by republican leaders was considered today by a group of senate republican prohibitionists, but no conclusions were reached. The prohibitionists held their unannounced conference in the office of Senator Borah of Idaho, who already has opened fire on the resubmission proposal for its omission of a specific substitute for the 18th amendment. Borah Called Conference. Borah presided over the gathering, which assembled so mysteriously that no one knew at first who called it. Borah did. 'We talked over the prohibition, situation with respect to the national convention,' the 'Idahoan said. 'It was simply an exchange of views on what the party should do. No effort to reach an agreement or conclusion was made. Eight friends of prohibition attended the meeting. It was said no further conferences were planned. Some of those present indicated there was no prospect of unified action by the group at Chicago. Borah reiterated tonight that he had no intention of going to the Chicago convention. Meanwhile, James R. Garfield, chairman of the resolutions committee, prepared to leave Washington tonight for Chicago with the tentative resubmission plank already given approval in principle by the congressional leaders. Those attending today's conference included Senators Borah, Smoot of Utah, Robinson of Indiana, Steiwer of Oregon, Thomas of Idaho, Capper of Kansas, Goldsborough of Maryland and Vandenberg of Michigan.

مصطلحات موضوعية: United States -- Illinois -- Will County -- New Lenox, New Lenox (Ill.) -- History, Archibald, Alice, " Leigh Anne Brewer Honors Civilization since 1660 MWF 12:00 Dr. A. W. Smith Alice Archibald is 104 years old. It all seems so amazing to me that I should be sitting across from her, conducting an interview. Less than 24 hours ago, I was several states away in Arkansas, where the sun was shining and the temperature was in the 50's. Yet here I am sitting in an old farmhouse, safe from the howling wind, the 2 feet of snow, and the deadly temperature. I can't believe how well she gets around for her old age. She was up and eating breakfast before I could even wake up and remember where the devil I was. But then, Alice was always a go-getter, ahead of her time. She was born Alice Lacey on September 1st, 1898 in Florence Township, Illinois, near Wilmington. Her father, Tom Lacey, was a farmer, who was famous in the area for his ""Lacey oats."" Her childhood was typical for the era. The fifth of six children, Alice did her share of chores around the farm. It was her responsibility to take care of the chickens and collect the eggs. She loved horses, and she and her siblings often rode the big draft horses for fun. ""They never hurt us,"" she said. ""I guess that they knew we were stupid."" The children walked one mile each way to the one-room school house, where one teacher taught sixteen or so students spread out over every grade. During the winter, Tom Lacey would drive his children to school in the bobsled. ""We'd go right over the fences, the snow was so high,"" Alice recalls. During her teenage years, she had what she called ""a nice social life."" I asked her how they celebrated Christmas. ""We always had a tree after mother died (in 1916). I don't remember a tree before that."" But she could not remember any special traditions. Although she and her siblings had saved up to give their father a radio, which he loved, Alice did not have any favorite radio programs. She preferred instead to read. When I asked if she had a particular favorite, she said, ""No, they were all my favorites."" She attended lots of parties
